Every legitimate online casino operates under a license from a real gambling regulator — and that license is the single most important thing to check before you create an account, not the welcome bonus.

Start with the footer, not the homepage

Legitimate operators display their license number, the issuing regulator, and a link to verify it — usually in the site footer. If you can't find any of this within thirty seconds, that's already a red flag worth taking seriously.

Verify the license on the regulator's own site

Don't just trust the badge — actual regulators (Malta Gaming Authority, UK Gambling Commission, and similar bodies in other jurisdictions) publish public registers where you can search a license number directly. A real license shows up; a copied logo doesn't.

Check who's missing, not just who's present

Some jurisdictions issue licenses with far lighter oversight than others. That doesn't automatically make an operator unsafe, but it does mean you should look a little closer at deposit limits, dispute resolution, and how withdrawals are handled before trusting it with real money.

Licensing isn't a guarantee, but it's the floor

A valid license doesn't mean a casino is perfect — but the absence of one means there's no regulator you can appeal to if something goes wrong. That distinction matters more than any bonus size ever will.
